Below we share the story of "Monterey Gold" and Dezba on this page to give you an idea of how widespread this problem is.

May 2013 - At a local auction, we rescued, what we originally thought, were two elderly Thoroughbred mares. After studying two very difficult to read tattoos, attempting to match markings and spending a number of days researching, (which included reaching out to Three Chimney's Farm in Kentucky for assistance), both mares have finally been identified. Shown here, is "Dezba", who was bred in Kentucky and sired by Three Chimney's Champion stud "War Chant".
As a yearling, Dezba was offered for sale at Keeneland for $160,000 and is now, just nine years old. The condition we found her in, along with the hectic pace at the auction, led us to initially think she was much older than she actually is.
Extremely depressed and exhausted, her mane painfully matted, she is at least several hundred pounds underweight and, (as is very common with the Thoroughbreds we rescue at auction), she is very sore on her front feet. In just a few short years, Dezba went from a horse who once shared a track with Zenyatta during a morning breeze, to the condition we found her in at Mike's. The latter is significant in how it reminds us of the descent, and less than Fairy Tale endings, so many of these old mares face.
Dezba's is just one of the many horses we were able to rescue.
