AHR is on Baby Watch!
Back in January, AHR attended a very remote auction in Central California, and rescued two pregnant mares. For less than $100, four lives total were saved from a one-way trip to slaughter.
That day at auction, the pregnant palomino was deemed by staff to be wild and untouchable, so the mare was set loose into the auction ring, like a feral horse who had never felt the touch of human hands. But even as she darted by in a panic, the mare's advanced pregnancy was very clear. So in one of those "I can't let something like this sell to slaughter" moments, we felt compelled to raise our arm to bid...and a mare and unborn baby were saved.
We are eternally grateful for Toby's Legacy Equine Rescue, Inc.for offering to take this yellow mare (since named "Darby") straight from auction, to immediately ready her the remainder of her pregnancy. The baby is due any day....on a nail-biting "Darby Watch," that can be followed on Toby's Legacy page!
Oh, and Darby turned out to be very gentle, tame and kind....she just needed a few days to realize she and her baby were finally safe!
At that same day's auction, a very old, emaciated pinto pony mare arrived, blind in one eye. Her owners dispassionately stated, "she's pregnant, I guess" and walked away. Our friends and prior AHR adopters Jen and Doug offered to take this expecting older lady into their home, knowing nothing more than were it not for the home offer, "Letty" and her unborn baby would have been on a one-way truck to Canada.
Instead, tonight, Letty is very safe and warm, and loved......
and showing signs of the imminent arrival of her foal! "Letty Watch" begins!
Will Darby finally foal now that she knows Letty's catching up?
Excited to see if these very lucky foals will hit the ground by the time "auction weekend" comes to a close
