Hip 91 from Mike's Auction, subsequently ID'd as 4-year-old Thoroughbred "Ticket To Return," then rescued off the feed lot by AHR.

Well, since then, she's been adopted by Shannon. And after 3 weeks of love, feed, and care, she's blossoming into quite the fancy little girl. No slaughter in her future!

What do we need, so we can rescue more horses from such harsh fates? The Chiron's and the Eclipse's, and the Lady Bug's? Adopters like Shannon! Please consider adopting one of our many rehabilitated rescues, listed

"Chiron" Update:

Can you believe how good he's looking already? After ten days of food and care, he's feeling it, too! Chiron is, indeed, a stallion -- and he's well aware. We can't wait til he's healthy enough to geld

Other than some worrisome but actively managed sheath and hind leg swelling, his weight continues to improve, as does his energy level and awareness of his surroundings. This formerly depressed, lethargic horse is starting to take a look around, realizing his lot in life, indeed, has improved.

And yes, he loves to holler at the ladies. Oh, Chiron!

Here's another photo showing the tick infestation "Gold On Gossamer" was dumped with. She NEEDS urgent rescue. Currently in San Ramon, CA. 10 year old, Kentucky-bred raced Thoroughbred mare by Gilded Time. Track broke broodmare, discarded.

If you can rescue or adopt this underweight OTTB with unknown issues -- truly rescue her, not expect this to be your child's next fancy hunter, or back to the feed lot she goes (people like that exist) - then fill out our application

IN URGENT NEED OF RESCUE:

"Gold On Gossamer" is a 10-year-old Kentucky-bred OTTB mare by Gilded Time, and out of Iristuka (by Stuka), with earnings of $48,000 at the major California tracks. Her last owner grossly underfed her, and then left her with a friend inexperienced with horses, but who knew enough to know her condition was very poor. Thankfully, she contacted AHR, asking for help.

The mare is likely only trackbroke, and has only one prior breeding. As of 3 weeks ago she was underweight and covered in ticks. Her new owner can not afford to keep her, but does not want her ending up anywhere bad. Can someone please help her?

If interested in rescuing or adopting this mare, please fill out our application at www.auctionhorsesrescue.com

Below picture is of he  the same horse -- "Gold On Gossamer" -- only this was shortly *before* she sold to the last neglectful owner. This is what this beauty can become again, with proper care, vet, and nutrition.

If anyone is willing to rescue this 10 yo Kentucky-bred OTTB, please fill out our application ASAP atwww.auctionhorsesrescue.com

Our priority when networking these horses is to ensure they don't end up dumped and exploited all over again.

Gold On Gossamer is currently located in San Ramon, CA.

Shanghied

Hip 83 from Mike's Auction earlier this month, was one of two lucky broodmares out of a band of over half a dozen to come to auction. The large group came together, all hungry, feet splayed and cracked, their legs and tails splattered with mud. These used up, older Thoroughbred mares were a heartbreaking sight, knowing they would all wind up selling to slaughter.

We were only able save one, hip 83, and follower Cheron was able to save one other, hip 82.

Hip 83, now named "Ruby," was immediately examined at West Coast Equine Hospital, straight from auction. Other than needing her teeth done, a farrier, and food, and some mild lameness issues, she was overall in decent health. Foster Nathalie picked her up and has been working on rehabilitating her since.

Today, we took another stab at trying to identify her by tattoo and markings. Now, without the mud splattering her legs, the marking on her hind left leg revealed itself.

Tentatively, we believe this mare to be 1991 Florida-bred "Shanghied," by Pass The Line and out of a Riva Ridge mare. Although the markings fit the mare to a T, as does the tattoo, we're a bit perplexed by the brief Florida racing career and no recorded Thoroughbred foals.

Was this mare used to produce Warmbloods? Perhaps AQHA? Further investigating will be done. Perhaps we're entirely wrong on the ID. This is an example of, identifying Thoroughbreds is far more difficult than just reading what's written on their lip.

If anyone possibly knows of a "Shanghied" being part of someone's non-Thoroughbred breeding program, please get in touch

Chiron, our neediest rescue of all, wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful for everyone's support in making our rescue efforts like this possible. We are always at the forefront of so much suffering and despair...to be able to pull some of these souls out of their misery makes the sacrifice of time, energy, sleep, money, all precious resources, worth it.

Thank you to our supporters, donors, our volunteers, our veterinarians, farriers, fosters and adopters.

For the many lives we've been able to save this year, hopefully we can make many more grateful to the hands they end up in, by years end -- like Chiron.

Please consider adopting one of our rescue horses, especially the companions.

IN NEED OF URGENT RESCUE:
One of our followers contacted us regarding 6-year-old OTTB stud "Warren's Bigthunder," at critical risk of ending up at auction. He's 15.1 hh, said to have been ridden in barrel races, and suffered a fracture to his leg on the track he is now said to be sound on. May have some head shyness issues, so not for novice handler -- and yes, he needs to be gelded ASAP.

Currently located in Central California.

Blake

"Broken Glass," aka Blake, was rescued from a slaughter auction in December 2012 by our friends at Farralone Farms. He was dumped at auction less than one month after his last race at Santa Anita, still wearing three of his four racing plates. His fetlock had been recently fractured, so was deemed unsound for racing. So there to auction he went.

On x-ray, it's been shown the small fracture to his fetlock will require injections two times a year to keep him sound for pleasure riding. He is sound and ready for trails, and has a great, gentle temperament for it. Not for a show / eventing home.

This snuggle bunny of a horse will also make a great companion for human or horse alike. If seeking a bit of Thoroughbred royalty to add to your family, please consider Blake!

Chiron Update

"Chiron" update:

The past few days, this is how we see Chiron when we look out the window -- his head happily buried in the feeder. Even in the middle of munching on alfalfa hay, he nickers at the sight of people. This is a happy camper, at "starved horse dim sum." Currently, his buffet is restricted to alfalfa hay, alfalfa pellets, and Safe Choice Special Care. Soon, we will begin adding small amounts of beet pulp to the feeding regimen.

Chiron, considering where he started at, is already beginning to put on weight. One set back is swelling that has been plaguing all four legs, so we have been cold hosing, gently walking, and wrapping -- the worst leg with the one Back On Track pillow wrap we have available. We've had great results with Back On Track products in the past, so always welcome the donation of any of their products!

Keeping a skeletal horse warm is also a constant concern, with the cold spell we weathered through the weekend. So again, thank you to everyone's generous blanket donations we were able to keep Chiron layered up and comfortable.

The biggest issue for Chiron now will be, fingers crossed, making sure his body continues to hold up for this long process.

If you would like to help with our efforts to bring Chiron back to full health, please donate to Fox Feed of Canyon Country at 661-252-9790
