Update on "Aries"

Update on "Aries":

We spoke with Dr. Kemper at West Coast Equine Hospital this evening. Unfortunately, the doctor was not as optimistic as we have known her to be while caring for our many other horses in the past. What we thought was massive swelling from a horribly neglected infection showed itself to be severe arthritis on x-ray. So severe, the size of her leg is actually due to bony growth that has left her leg permanently enlarged and deformed.

Dr. Kemper would like to give Aries a chance, and see how much the pain will subside once the infection is under control. We of course agreed, with the goal being to see if she can be comfortable enough to live a pain-free life as a very kind companion horse. If we are successful, we are hoping someone will step up and provide this mare the loving home she has never had, and deserves.

If you would like to contribute toward Aries continuing vet care, please call West Coast Equine Hospital during regular business

This was "Aries," as we now call her, once she arrived at West Coast Equine Hospital last night.

The hundreds of miles we had to drive, along with the two other mares we had to secure the safety of, meant an exhausting day. But once Aries was under expert veterinary supervision, we could finally go home and rest.

Today, we're awaiting word on the extent of her injury. So far, her wounds have been debrided, treated, and wrapped, pain medication given, and antibiotics administered. She's such a kind mare.

Her prior owner states her registered name with the Jockey Club is something like "Mrs Black," and 12 years old (which fits her teeth), but extensive searches of variants in equineline's database has revealed nothing.

Whoever she is, we hope and pray she's on the road to recovery now.

While we were getting the injured mare to the hospital, at the same time, we were able to arrange the safety of two of the seven recipient mares!

"Springisintheair," the ex-racehorse with the severely bowed tendon, and the unidentified tattooed Thoroughbred mare, were taken to safety by our friends at Farralone Farms today.

If you would like to donate toward Springisintheair and the tattooed mare's bail and rehabilitation costs, please send your donations to Farralone Farms at farralonefarms@outlook.com

This is what we found.....a nightmare on earth.

Barely able to walk, let alone stand, this Thoroughbred mare was starving and dehydrated, with a misshapen, deeply infected, swollen leg. It was stated that it was a several months old barbedwire injury (the deep cut further up her leg even more worrying than the infection down by her pastern), when she was being ridden at night. Once the barbed wire wrapped itself and tore through her leg, she bolted with it pierced into the front of her hock. Since then, her owners had continued riding her on this very severe injury, even using her for "dressage" and "barrel racing."

We immediately called our hauler, and made preparations to ship her to West Coast Equine Hospital. It was a long walk, the short distance she had to traverse from the yard to the trailer, the mare just barely able to hobble up the ramp.

But we got her on there. And she's on her way to safety now.

When it rains it pours...

Fresh on the heels of the seven recipient mares we're desperately trying to place, this morning we received a call from a young man who is moving in a few days, and needs to find a home for his horse. What he told us about her was completely different than the horror he texted us a few minutes later. Supposedly recently in "dressage" training, and has "a little cut on her leg that's getting better," the photos he sent instead show an emaciated mare with a grotesquely swollen ankle.

This Thoroughbred mare is located in the Southern California area, and absolutely nothing else is known about her at this time.

If a rescue or private rescuer can take this mare in urgent need, please email us at auctionhorsesrescue@gmail.com

Do NOT comment you will take the horse, etc. If interested, email us privately. Serious offers to rescue this mare only.

Adele

Adele was brought to auction, late last summer, from a boarding barn in the Chatsworth area. We never could find history on this sweet, unidentified Thoroughbred mare, but remain hopeful that some day we can figure out what her life was previously. If anyone recognizes her, please get in touch! Adele is about 15 years old, roughly 15.3 hh, and a lovely mover.

Adele was fostered for us for a few months after auction, til she began to drop weight with a mysterious illness. Last month, we sent her to West Coast Equine Hospital in Somis for full diagnostics, and it was found she had an extremely abnormal white blood cell count, and a month of antibiotics were prescribed. Unfortunately all other diagnostics could not find any sign of what could be causing the abnormal white blood cell count, but the antibiotics did the trick. Adele is now all healthy!

About 50 more lbs of weight to go, and Adele will be ready to begin work under saddle. She will be available for adoption, pending assessment!
