Barely able to walk, let alone stand, this Thoroughbred mare was starving and dehydrated, with a misshapen, deeply infected, swollen leg. It was stated that it was a several months old barbedwire injury (the deep cut further up her leg even more worrying than the infection down by her pastern), when she was being ridden at night. Once the barbed wire wrapped itself and tore through her leg, she bolted with it pierced into the front of her hock. Since then, her owners had continued riding her on this very severe injury, even using her for "dressage" and "barrel racing."
We immediately called our hauler, and made preparations to ship her to West Coast Equine Hospital. It was a long walk, the short distance she had to traverse from the yard to the trailer, the mare just barely able to hobble up the ramp.
But we got her on there. And she's on her way to safety now.
