Hip 152 from Saturday's auction, is now settled in at adopter Valerie's ranch in Las Vegas. A tall drink of water, and a total sweetheart.
We've come to find this well-traveled OTTB is 2009 KY-bred gelding "Dark Demon," by Artie Schiller (winner of $2.8 mil) and out of Tender Storm (by Honor And Glory).
The 17.2 hh gelding is unraced, but had his last listed work at Belmont Racetrack (New York) in 2012. How on earth, a year later, did he end up at a Southern California auction?
As a 2-year-old, he sold at the Fasig-Tipton Sale for $27,000. Two-years later, we rescued him for $200.
Thank you Valerie for taking a chance on Dark Demon. In the high-stress environment of the auction, the 4-year-old made it clear no one would be touching his lip -- the necessary means with which we ID Thoroughbred's at auction. Turns out he was hiding quite the little mystery under there.
Either way, he's safe now. And for that alone, we are happy.
