"Just Sophie" and "Tell Me Why," two companion-sound Thoroughbred mares we rescued from the slaughter buyer earlier this year, finally found their forever home! The two girls, who are the bestest of friends, left yesterday for Oakdale. We're very excited for these two neediest of all rescues -- the old brown mares overlooked by everyone -- including the rescuers. It was a long road to find them homes, but they deserved it, as much as any riding horse.
At Cowtown Auction on Saturday, almost every horse that sold to slaughter was old, nondescript and brown, like these two. Not paint, not buckskin, not roan. And certainly not a mini. Just the plain brown mares.
Now, with Just Sophie and Tell Me Why placed, onwards with our mission -- to rescue the horses in most serious need. Though we're happy to find good homes for the minis and the flashy roans, paints, buckskins -- horses like Tell Me Why and Just Sophie are our real passion.
