Hip 225, the sick 28-year-old mare brought to auction so she wouldn't die on the owners property.. Well, we rescued her, and took her to Taylor Vet in Central California today for a thorough examination, to decide the best, most humane course of action.
This sweet mare, "Grace," has advanced melanomas, along with some type of uterine infection caused an extreme amount of purulent discharge. Even if the condition were to be controlled with extensive antibiotic therapy, the melanomas are advanced enough also to cause her a painful death, sometime soon.
So, we agree euthanizing her would likely be the kindest option. Grace is enjoying her final bucket of Safe Choice, while we make arrangements to give her a humane end.
It's heartbreaking that this very gentle mare, with the kindest eye you will have ever seen, was brought to auction by the very woman who had "loved" her since she was a 9 year old little girl. But now she's old and sick, and rather than pay the money for euthanasia, dropped her off at auction while she could still stand, for a quick $20..
Euthanasia, combined with the physical exam and disposal costs in Turlock, amounts to an unexpectedly high bill of $538. If you can help us pull this off, what we feel is the kindest action for Grace at this point in the twilight of her life, please help us reach the $538 needed.
