Hip 46, the First Down Dash mare "First Jet Gone," at 19-years-old and still only track broke, was left at the auction on Saturday to sell to the kill buyer. Which she did. Along with 22-year-old Thoroughbred "Best Anthem," they both wound up on the slaughter truck late that night. By night's end, we were able to rescue Best Anthem -- now named "Nick" -- in the 'nick' of time, but we were heartbroken to have to leave this old, swaybacked broodmare behind.

Fortunately, our friend Mary stepped up for her, and purchased her off the feed lot yesterday! Thank you so much, Mary. We worked very hard through the weekend to come up with a legitimate, rescue solution for this mare, ironically at the same time we were rescuing fellow Racing Quarter Horse, "Queenie Juanita" (along with the old paint mare,"Gimpy").

Also, it turns out Queenie Juanita and First Jet Gone are very closely related! The sire of Queenie is Kentucky-bred Thoroughbred "Zevi," who is also the dam sire of Zoro Jet, the graded stakes-winning dam of First Jet Gone. Interesting to come upon such close relations in two older racing Quarter Horse broodmares, now discarded and done with, at the same time.

Though First Jet Gone has found her forever home, Queenie Juanita has not. If interested in adopting and providing a long term retirement home for Queenie, please email us
