Narrowly rescued before shipping off to slaughter, this 14-year-old Thoroughbred, ex-racehorse, and "used-up" broodmare has had a long, storied past we're only now beginning to unravel.
Thank you to everyone for making her rescue possible! Portia is now under the care of Sarah Parlier and her rescue Equine Racers. Updates to follow as her vet takes a deeper look at a number of ailments that seem to plague the mare.
Since she was rumored to have come from a "hoarder," her poor condition shouldn't be too big of a surprise. Yet it is, every time, all the same. These horses endure so much, silently, rarely with any relief, before an unknown, painful end.
But for her faded, barely legible tattoo, Portia Brown might have been lost forever, too.
Instead, the "useless" mare has a second chance at a happy, cared-for life.
