Singlestar

"Singlestar" is a 6-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, by multiple graded stakes winner Singletary. With only 10 starts under his belt, running at Golden Gate Fields and Los Alamitos, Singlestar never once hit the board. And yet, despite his lack of success, his legs bear witness to the hard toll of racing, anyway.

At 15.1 hh, Singlestar was rescued from Mike's Auction in January (alongside Seattle Souvenir and High Z, with help from After The Finish Line), with hopes he could have a future in polo. But instead, a vet exam revealed severe arthritis in his knees.

We decided to send Singlestar to West Coast Equine Hospital for proper diagnostics, to decide if the young gelding had any sort of rehabilitatable future, or if the damage was too extensive for life as even a companion horse. Whatever was best for the horse, we would do.

To our surprise, although X-rays revealed several old fractures that had since healed with significant arthritis, the main significator of Singlestar's health -- the horse himself -- was excellent: a happy, carefree horse who walked without a lame step, and an overall congenial temperament.

Dr. Kemper's verdict was, like Tribal Legend before him, Singlestar could make a lovely horse for light pleasure riding. And surprisingly, even when Singlestar picks up a trot at liberty, it isn't half bad!

To help Singlestar on his journey, we started him on two supplements donated to us by NaturVet -- MSM and ArthriEase Gold. Along with that, we had West Coast administer a joint injection, and now we are watching and seeing how this boy thrives.

If he continues to, like Tribal Legend before him, we will adopt him out as a "walking trail horse." And yes, Tribal Legend has gone onto excel at his new job!

Having the right temperament is critical for rehabilitating horses with limitations into "light riding" careers. So far, so good. He ties well, has excellent ground manners, isn't in the least bit cinchy, and walks into unfamiliar territory like an old pro.

Singlestar has what it takes.
