Very sad to hear Sterling's Stormy passed away, earlier this week. Stormy was an emaciated old pony stallion, who came to auction last fall. He turned out to be a famed Chincoteague Pony, and thanks to our followers, we were able to send him home. Chincoteague Pony Rescue in Maryland cared for him in his final months.

It is with great sadness that we tell you that the much-loved Sterling's Stormy has passed away at 28 years old.

Following breakfast and a morning nap in his deeply-bedded stall, Stormy went to get up with the extra effort that old horsesmake, and in doing so he hurt his left shoulder. Immediate veterinary care revealed the injury was in fact a spontaneous break. The vet said the previous neglectful years of poor nutrition had led to his bones becoming brittle. It became clear that euthanasia was the only option, and so we reluctantly and tearfully said goodbye. Stormy was as sorry to leave us as we were to let him go.

His stay with us here at the Rescue was full of joy and care. He slept in the barn next to the house, beside the young colts he mentored. He thrived on constant attention, 3 meals a day, good-weather turnout, grooming, handwalks around the property, and late-night treats. His ability to communicate and make requests that we happily fulfilled were a constant highlight and source of amusement. No horse could have spent his twilight period more appreciated and appreciative. He truly seemed to have come home.

One supporter described Stormy's life here as 'Pre-Heaven'. We are bereft without him.

In the comments below, PLEASE post how you first learned of him, or met him, or your experiences with him so we can enjoy your experience too. Your stories will be added to his album here for all to enjoy as we celebrate his life in the years to come.

You are all familiar with the story of his rescue, shown in the video on our home page. This will remain as our tribute.
