Rescue #2 today was this gorgeous, 12-year-old Appendix Quarter Horse mare. Identified by tattoo as "Legend Express," by Special Legend and out of a Ronas Ryon mare, this Idaho-bred OTQH raced 3 times at Prairie Meadows, including an unimpressive run in a Futurity Trial. 10 years later, she took her turn at a livestock auction, selling between lots of...ducks. Some sorely overgrown feet, and ungodly long hooks in her mouth, speak to having gone without quality care for quite some time.

Today, her teeth were floated at West Coast Equine Hospital, then vaccinated and wormed, with a farrier appointment scheduled for tomorrow. Now, she heads to LA Pet Rescue in Chatsworth, where she will be available for adoption.

Here's this lucky stunner's pedigree:

For $30, this very crippled 5-year-old Azteca colt was rescued today from the livestock auction, then taken directly to West Coast Equine Hospital. Dr. Kent Sullivan gave him a thorough lameness exam, and concluded he was a severe wobbler, so severe any possible treatments would have negligible effect. And, the pain he was in was severe, constant tail swishing, with limited ability to hold himself up with his rear end.

So...the decision was made. RIP, pretty boy.

Thank you, LA Pet Rescue.

So...stitches, X-rays, and...."only" a bruised bone that will at most cause her to need a few more months layup. Hopefully, only a few weeks! Oh, Clubhouse...she always seems to have her heart set on staying. This is the nicest bred, nicest moving, nicest temperament of any horse we've rescued, but she always comes up with a way to make herself unadoptable. Congratulations, Clubhouse -- you've done it again. More layup time!

The joys of owning, let alone rescuing, horses.

Ahh horses...they love to hurt themselves. Clubhouse Rules, finally feeling sound after having a definitive diagnosis of mild pedal osteitis, and yet another lay-up...this time with pads on. Well, she decided she feels great now. And promptly attempted some Lipizzaner feats, with a very out-of-shape body. And so, after doing a slide and a body slam into a fence...she's on her way to the hospital, three-legged lame, looking at her side, her lip curled in the air (signifying pain). Very upsetting, and yet, at the same time....I can't help but shake my head.

Pray for Clubhouse...now it's her turn at the "oh dear.." game. Hopefully we'll know what damage she did to herself, shortly.

This is what a few weeks of good food, rest, vet and farrier does for a horse.... Lady Bug's first buck! Wheeeeee!

Daily turn-out and play time is very important for horses (and all animals). Gotta sow your wild oats, a few minutes outta every day!

More of "Dashing Lady Bug" and her pretty trot. We've rescued a number of Quarter Horse ex-racehorses, and Lady Bug was one of three just over the past few weeks. We have no idea where she's been since she came off the racetrack, many years before, but other than being a bit underweight and needing a pair of shoes, she doesn't seem to have suffered any permanent damage. Sadly, this girl went through auction last month, receiving no bids other than the kill buyer and us.. And she was ours, for $140.

We hope to adopt out Lady Bug soon, as she has no major issues requiring a long term stay at our rescue. If interested in adopting Lady Bug, please fill out our application

The sun is back out, and Dashing Lady Bug took her turn in the round pen. This descendent of Dash For Cash and Easy Jet lunges like a pro, and understands voice commands. Very nice! Hopeful this means she's broke, too. Now that her weight is getting to where we would like it, she's ready for the next stage

Lady Bug is a 17-year-old, 15.1 hh OTQH, and available for adoption through AHR, pending riding evaluation.

If interested in adopting your very own Dash For Cash descendent, please fill out our applicatio
