Even on a 38*F morning, "Mi Gatita" is certain she wants to be someone's next jumping prospect! Wheeeee!

It's an ice cold day in Santa Clarita today. Thanks to everyone's blanket donations we're able to keep everyone warm, though Mi Gatita took our last 76"! We're short on blankets in the 76" - 80" range. Warmer the better, waterproof is great but not required. The mountain cold, and the large volume of emaciated horses, and thin-coated breeds we tend to rescue, means blankets are essential through the winter. If you can help us stock back up on 76-80" blankets, please email "Mi Gatita"...totally gorgeous. Can't wait to get this beauty in the ring, under saddle! Special thanks to hauler Stephanie Sherman for yet another busy day transporting our many rescue horses safely, reliably and professionally. So much of what we're able to do is thanks to her timely services. Two horses adopted today, while another enters training -- the next phase of her rehab. Looking forward to placing many more! Become an AHR adopter! Please take a look at our list of adoptable horses at www.auctionhorsesrescue.com "Mi Gatita," a 5-year-old Thoroughbred racehorse, sold at auction a few months back, over raced, stressed out, and distraught by her surroundings. Another Boston Baked Bean -- an amped-up racehorse, bewildered by their surroundings. Kristin Mulhall offered to foster Mi Gatita through her "decompression" period, an offer we gratefully accepted. Kristin's expertise as a race trainer meant we could receive a realistic assessment of where this mare's "head" was at. A period of time to come off the high grain diet and cooped-up stall of racetrack life, along with any trauma she endured since then (she was brought to auction by notorious match racers). Although still only track broke, she's willing under saddle, over poles, and took to the jump chute like a charm. Mi Gatita is ready for a job, so she's on her way back to our facility, to begin training under saddle. If interested in adopting Mi Gatita, please fill out our adoption application at www.auctionhorsesrescue.com Mi Gatita is located in Santa Clarita, CA. "Cool Shades" was another remarkable transformation. A 23-year-old Thoroughbred broodmare, dropped off at the feed lot in a horrifically emaciated condition, her owners explaining they had "forgot to feed her." Well, thanks to AHR, Barb and her vet, as well as Jan providing a layover spot, Cool Shades was able to get her 11th hour reprieve. A reprieve that too few of these broodmares receive. Congratulations to Cool Shades, for finding a forever home with Vanessa's family. This old lady will make a wonderful, and very grateful, babysitter for the grand kids! If you would like to adopt your own rehabilitated rescue through AHR, please look to our website -http://www.auctionhorsesrescue.com/ In 2012, a follower alerted us to an emaciated pony she drove by every day, on the way to school. After several months of no action from the local animal control, and the pony continued to drop weight, we went direct to the owner and offered to take the starved horse "off their hands." A year later, Vanessa contacted us hoping to adopt a companion horse or pony for her grand kids to love on. Lucy, and Cool Shades (a Thoroughbred broodmare rescued off the feed lot), fit the bill Today, Lucy and Cool Shades, two horses who came to us horrifically emaciated, leave for their forever home, completely transformed. Thank you to fosters Andrea and Barb for making the rescue of Lucy, and Cool Shades, possible. And thank you Vanessa for opening your home to the girls! If interested in adopting your very own rehabilitated rescue, please go to www.auctionhorsesrescue.com for our list of available horses. Save a life, adopt a horse! Say hello to "Portia Brown"! Narrowly rescued before shipping off to slaughter, this 14-year-old Thoroughbred, ex-racehorse, and "used-up" broodmare has had a long, storied past we're only now beginning to unravel. Thank you to everyone for making her rescue possible! Portia is now under the care of Sarah Parlier and her rescue Equine Racers. Updates to follow as her vet takes a deeper look at a number of ailments that seem to plague the mare. Since she was rumored to have come from a "hoarder," her poor condition shouldn't be too big of a surprise. Yet it is, every time, all the same. These horses endure so much, silently, rarely with any relief, before an unknown, painful end. But for her faded, barely legible tattoo, Portia Brown might have been lost forever, too. Instead, the "useless" mare has a second chance at a happy, cared-for life. For updates on Portia's recovery, please go tohttp://www.facebook.com/pages/EquineRacers-Rehoming-Racehorses-in-Southern-California/ "Sierra Madam" update: Although you wouldn't guess it, through Sierra's thick fuzzy coat lurks a skinny body -- a BCS of 3.5 -- spine and hips beginning to protrude. Since Sierra's rescue coincided with an Arctic cold spell coming through California, we found Cindy Savitt's donated blanket fit her perfectly -- thank you, Cindy! Without much fat or muscle to insulate her vital organs, blanketing is an essential part of her rehabilitation, as temperatures drop into the 20s. The farrier is up next for Sierra, while we give her a few weeks to gain ample weight. There's some thickening in her ankles, so x-rays and joint injections may also be in this young, over-raced mare's future, as we work to bring her to as healthy of a state as she is capable. If you would like to sponsor Sierra's care, rehabilitation and recovery, please donate through our website -http://www.auctionhorsesrescue.com/donate.html |
